Some said “the bass player plays too many notes” but I never thought so. I always knew it was because this guitar player couldn’t play very many.
SSNUB was formed in NYC in 1984 or 5? Who can remember now? Evolved out of Ethnic Bread, a folky duo named after a sign in a bodega. Ethnic Bread played around Columbia University and at open mic nights at Folk City. NYC was a different place then, with garbage in the streets and airshafts and a subway covered in graffiti. At CBGB to hear the band Desk Set, we were given a lead on a bass player from Queens, looking for a band. It clicked immediately. The early jams were in a huge rehearsal studio up in Midtown. The songs came fast, written in traffic, on the train, in a Barnard dorm room, a Spanish Harlem sixth floor walk-up apartment.
